“It happened in Dorchester, Mass., or so it
feels, or so it’s written. The old man struggles
along the concrete, scraping forward, seeking
his resting place. Memories/flashbacks
shatter his mind. A time long ago. School,
a loving mother, a ride on the streetcar. A
father who works in a world apart from his
family, distanced from his family in contact,
emotion, time. This is a book that might be
set in the Boston area, but it could be any city,
any place, any child, any man, and the women
and love in his life. But in Ethereal, the doctor
is ‘in’. He’s in your mind, he brings you into
his world. You don’t read the words on a
page, you dissolve into the pages. The scenes
surround, transport, engulf you. You’re
linked with the man, the woman, the boy,
the girl. There is no book, there’s only you,
and the many named and unnamed voices.
You don’t want to be in here. You don’t want
to continue. You will. it pulls you. You don’t
think of the author. You don’t see the words.
In a world crafted by imagery, taste, sight,
feelings, heat, passion, and hell, you feel
the loss. You feel the disdain. You feel the
abandonment. You feel the love. You feel.
Read this book and you’ll touch the past. And
you’ll never be the same. You’ll be better.”

“Donovan is a master wordsmith and wields
immense power with his pen as he stimulates
readers’ senses to respond to his written
message. Nor can one read Donovan without
giving imagination free rein, for it is the staff
which with he weaves his lines, be they prose
or poetry. The result is pure magic.”

“Dr. Donovan uses his psychiatric
background to write about the fragile and
innocent invisible beings around us that
we do not recognize. Also, he writes of
human nature that shows its nefarious
and baseless side when selfishness and
pride raises its head. Dr. Donovan goes
from light to darkness then back to light
again throughout his novel. To go from the
warmth and security of being held, to the
raw heartlessness of total abandonment.
Masterfully written!”

“Donovan examines the very deepest
foundation of compassion and lack of
compassion in the most unique love story
I have ever read.”
